One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest part II

Part II begins with Chief Bromden worrying to himself that everyone at the ward has unmasked his disguise because McMurphy told him to lift his hand and he did. While sitting in the tv room, the black boy approaches Chief Bromden and tells him to go do his duty and Chief Bromden acts like he doesn't hear him. The black boy grabs him and directs him to his duty. During every staff meeting at the ward Chief Bromden is allowed to clean around because they "think" that he's disable meanwhile he's been easedropping the whole time. Chief Bromden overhears Nurse Rachet saying that McMurphy is committed and that he's only making it worse for himself. My question is why hasn't McMurphy been informed that he's committed and needs Nurse Rachet's help to leave? Wouldn't it have benifited McMurphy if he knew from the start?
